The Genomics England Collaboration Platform has been developed within the wiki-based Confluence environment. It has been designed to be as simple as possible with the hope that each domain and member can create, edit and maintain their own content. The analysis environment is, by design, restrictive, and we hope that the Collaboration Platform will allow you to work effectively within it.

The Basics

Organisation

The collaboration platform is divided into spaces. There is a space for the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS), and then each GeCIP domain also has it's own space. Within the OCS space is where you'll find a lot of information on the 100,000 Genomes Project and other reference material. Each domain's space will contain a variety of information on their activities for both members and non-members

Permissions

Just like any other website there are only parts of the collaboration platform that you're allowed to edit and view. What you're able to edit and view is determined by what GeCIP domains you are a member of and what role you play within that domain. Exactly how you see the page, and what you're able to do on the page will depend on both of these.

The Header Bar

At the top of each page the header bar gives you access to, left to right:

  • A - your homepage/dashboard;
  • B - the various spaces you're able to access;
  • C - a directory of the people within GeCIP and GENE;
  • D - the calendars within those spaces;
  • E - the Create button;
  • F - a search box to search throughout the site;
  • G - Confluence help, please note that because this is to an outside website this does not currently work;
  • H - your notification area;
  • I - your user profile.

The Side Bar

The side bar

Once in a space, the left hand side of the page will show the side bar. This can be collapsed or expanded by clicking on '>>' (H) at the bottom. This gives access to:

  • A - the homepage for the space you're in;
  • B - a listing of recently updated pages within the space and the tree structure for the space;
  • C - the space's blog;
  • D - the space's calendar;
  • E - a workflow report for the space;
  • F - a link to child pages of the current page;
  • G - settings for the current space.

Page tools

At the top of each page, permissions depending, you'll have the following options:

  • A - to edit the page;
  • B - to  watch the page;
  • C - the share the page;
  • D - see the workflow of approvals for the page;
  • E - various other options.

Creating and Editing Pages

If you have the right Genomics England Collaboration Platform then you can easily edit and create content within a space.

Creating a new page

  1. Navigate to the parent page under which you'd like to create a page.
  2. On that page click on Create pagebutton on the header bar.
  3. Select from one of the available page templates, or chose a Blank Page.
  4. Enter the title for your page and then add your content.
  5. When you've finished adding content, click on the Save page button in the bottom right hand corner.

Editing and formatting content

By clicking on in the top right hand corner of a page, or after creating a new page, you'll enter a text editor that will allow you to format and structure your page in a standardised way via toolbar at the top of the page

  • A - There are various header and paragraph styles, which look like:

  • B - Basic text formatting options are given for which there are shortcut keys:
    • Bold - <Ctrl>+B
    • Italic - <Ctrl> + I
    • Underline - <Ctrl> + U
  • C - Bullet and numbered lists are available and can be indented and unindented with <tab> and <shift>+<tab> accordingly.
  • D - There is the option to add specific tasks and assign users and due dates to them.
  • E - Paragraphs and list items can be indented and unindented.
  • F - Text can be left-, center-, or right-justified.
  • G - Columns and sections of columns within a page can be added via the Page layout tool.
  • H - Files, images, link and tables can all be added to a page via these buttons. This also provides the means to insert symbols, and macros.
  • I - Undo and Redo are available whilst editing.

Macros

Using macros helps you to expand the capabilities of your page, allowing you to add extra functionality or include dynamic content. For example, use the Table of Contents macro to insert a listing of the headings in the page (if you've used the heading paragraph styles above) like the table shown at the top of this page. Or if you'd like to specifically mention someone in a page you can type '@' and then start typing their name to invoke the User mention macro.

Watching, Commenting, and Sharing Pages

Page comments

You can add general comments to the page as a whole by clicking on the text box at the bottom labelled 'Write a comment..'. This will then open a textbox with much of the same formatting options as for a page.

Inline comments

To add inline comments, select the text you'd like to comment on and the Add inline comment button will appear:

By clicking on the comment icon you'll then be given a text box to add your comment.

Watching a page

You can 'watch' a certain page, or indeed an entire space, by clicking on the button in the top right of the page. By watching a page you'll be notified by email when it is changed, deleted, or commented on. When you save a page you're editing you can chose whether or not to notify watchers of the changes you've made.

Sharing pages

You can easily share pages with individuals or groups via the button in the top right of the page. You can either share with individual users (start typing their name) or with a group, for example the entire domain.
