Genomics England GeCIP Coordinators

Within Genomics England there are three GeCIP Coordinators, representing the Cancer, Cross-Cutting and Rare Diseases programmes. They are tasked with ensuring a smooth and efficient relationship between Genomics England and GeCIP.

Cancer GeCIP Coordinator - Simon Thompson

Simon ThompsonSimon gained a PhD in Cardiovascular Genetics from UCL, studying the impact of genetic variation in an inflammatory regulator on risk of heart disease. He then spent four years as a postdoctoral researcher with Professor Sarah Tishkoff at University of Pennsylvania studying the genetic architecture of indigenous populations in Africa. Upon returning back to England he took a position as Research Coordinator at The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (www.gacd.org) where he was responsible for managing the joint activities of a $50m research programme, particularly concentrating on the strategic, logistical and research management of the global research community.

Cross-Cutting GeCIP Coordinator - @kwitkowska

Kate Witkowska

Kate gained her PhD in Physiology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, characterising novel molecular mechanisms of urate transport before taking a postdoctoral position within the Clinical Pharmacology department at William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London where she developed protocols for functional characterisation of candidate genes associated with blood pressure.

Rare Diseases GeCIP Coordinator - @Freya BP

Freya completed her PhD in genetics of cardiovascular risk in Steve Humphries’ Cardiovascular Genetics group at UCL. Her research focused on the effect of genetic variation on carotid intima-media thickness and atherosclerosis. She then worked as the Project Manager for StoreGene, a company combining genetic testing with traditional risk factors to provide personalised risk profiles for cardiovascular disease.

GMCs

NHS England has established 13 NHS Genomics Medicines Centres (GMCs) that have been vital in the continuing success of the 100,000 Genomes Project. For more information and to contact a GMC directly please vist the Genomics England website.
